Transforming a natural grass playing field into an artificial turf field

When quality is the top priority in the construction of sports facilities, successful projects offer athletes the possibility to express their excellence to the full. This was the project for the renovation of the “La Muntanyeta” municipal sports area in Calella, near Barcelona: a major requalification of the sports facility focusing mainly on the athletics track floor and the football pitch.

The previous athletics track, installed by MONDO in 2002, had come to the end of its life cycle; to replace it, the Sportflex Super X 720 K39 vulcanized rubber prefabricated athletics track was chosen, suited for both training and competitions and certified by World Athletics.

The football pitch inside the athletics track was significantly transformed, from natural grass to artificial turf. Let’s have a look at the details of this advantageous transformation.

Conversion of a football pitch from natural grass to artificial turf

The renewed football pitch surface at “La Muntanyeta” is a concrete example of how it is possible to convert a natural grass football pitch into an artificial turf pitch, without compromising the quality of play or the sports performance of the athletes.

At “La Muntanyeta” in Calella, the pitch was converted by replacing the natural grass with a MONDO artificial turf system.

The installed system is Mondoturf X3 ASN is an innovative turf combining the new XNOVA filaments with 4XN mono-filaments and Monofeel filaments featuring a pre-fibrillated straight structure, with performance infill in sand and SBR granules.

The new playing field is the size of an 11-a-side football pitch (99x60m), with pitch markings also for two crosswise 7-a-side pitches (60x40m); its final appeal is unprecedented, not only in functional but also in aesthetic terms. The Mondoturf X3 system blends fibers in three different shades of green, giving the surface a blended appearance due to the intense color effect similar to that of natural grass.

Why prefer an artificial turf football pitch

The choice to convert the natural grass football pitch into an artificial turf pitch bears witness to the commitment of the managers of the “La Muntanyeta” sports facility in Calella to embrace a solution that cared for the needs of both the athletes and the environment.

The state of the art in synthetic turf has in fact been shown to be highly competitive when compared to conventional natural grass pitches.

So why are more and more designers and technical managers choosing to install artificial turf in sports centers?

We answer this question with an overview of the advantages offered to the more than 75,000 square feet of artificial turf laid in the new Calella playing field with the Mondoturf X3 system, in addition to another 4,300 square feet in the area next to one of the semi-circles on the athletics track:

  • possibility for intensive field use, for extended usage times and more frequent training and playing sessions, thanks to the high strength of the synthetic fibers it is made from;
  • enhanced uniformity of the playing surface: the Mondoturf X3 artificial turf system is uniform in all parts, guaranteeing constant characteristics in each area of the field and in all seasons;
  • better quality of play and performance: excellent sporting and technical functions, enhanced ball bounce and roll control and minimal infill migration and lifting, thanks to the combined fibers in the X3 tuf;
  • safety for the players and air quality: the MONDO Mondoturf X3 artificial turf has obtained Greenguard and Greenguard Gold certification, confirming the low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions;
  • low maintenance: with consequent running cost and time savings. At “La Muntanyeta” an innovative pop-up irrigation system was also installed;
  • longer lasting: thanks to the greater fiber density and the zig-zag tufting (which also limits the loss of yarns even when subject to intensive use);
  • resistance to bad weather conditions: Mondoturf was designed to withstand different climatic and atmospheric conditions, preserving its biomechanical, physical and aesthetic properties;
  • field type-approved for high level competitions. FIFA and has recognized synthetic football pitches as suitable systems for holding high-level official competitions.

The renovation of the “La Muntanyeta” sports facility is an example of how sports area modernization is not only a matter of merely replacing obsolete or worn structures and equipment, but can be an opportunity for redesigning the facility and its components: offering greater efficiency for sports people and athletes, guaranteeing them better game performance.
