From national trials to the World Indoor Championships: athletes compete on Mondo tracks

Mondo athletics tracks continue to be the benchmark for the world’s leading indoor competitions, accompanying athletes from national level events to the biggest international stages.

In recent weeks, numerous national indoor athletics championships have been held on Mondo athletics tracks, providing athletes with optimal competition conditions on the road to the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 2026, scheduled from 20–22 March in Toruń, Poland.

At the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena in Toruń, athletes will compete on a permanent Mondo banked track surfaced with Sportflex Super X K39, one of the most advanced indoor track surfaces in the world, designed to deliver high performance, safety, and long-term consistency.

For many of them, this technology is already familiar: the same one they competed on during the national championships held in the weeks leading up to the global event.

National indoor championships across Europe

Across Europe as well, many of the continent’s leading national indoor championships are held on Mondo athletics tracks, confirming the widespread presence of Mondo technology in major indoor facilities.

These include:

  • Italian Indoor Championships – Ancona
  • French Indoor Athletics Championships – Clermont-Ferrand
  • British / UK Indoor Athletics Championships – Utilita Arena Birmingham
  • Swedish Indoor Athletics Championships – Sätra (Stockholm)
  • Icelandic Indoor Combined Events Championships – Reykjavík
  • Finnish Indoor Athletics Championships – Kameleonten Leppävaara (Espoo)
  • Greek Indoor Athletics Championships – Paiania (Athens)
  • Portuguese Indoor Athletics Championships – Braga
  • Irish Indoor Athletics Championships – National Indoor Arena, Abbottstown (Dublin)

These events represent the pinnacle of the national indoor season and often serve as key qualification opportunities for international competitions.

One of the standout performances of the European indoor season came at the Italian Indoor Championships in Ancona (February 28 – March 1).

On that occasion, Francesco Fortunato delivered an outstanding performance in the 5000m race walk short track, clocking 17:54.48 and breaking the world record of 17:55.65 that he had set at the same event the previous year.

Spain’s national championships on a Mondo track

Among the major events of the European indoor season is the Spanish Short Track Championships, held at the Velódromo Lluís Puig in Valencia, one of Europe’s most important indoor athletics venues.

The competition was contested on a Mondo hydraulic banked track with Sportflex Super X 720 surface, renovated in 2022 and certified by World Athletics.

The event brought together 550 athletes from 109 clubs and 17 regional federations, confirming Valencia’s role as one of Spain’s leading indoor athletics hubs.

Two new records were set during the weekend:

  • Mohamed Attaoui – championship record in the men’s 800m (1:45.62)
  • Marta Mitjans – Spanish U23 record in the women’s 800m (2:01.86)

The Velódromo Lluís Puig track boasts a long international tradition: it hosted the 1998 European Indoor Championships and the 2008 World Indoor Championships, and will welcome the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2027.

National trials in the United States

In the United States, the USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships represent the premier national indoor competition and a key step on the pathway to international events.

In recent years, the event has been held on Mondo athletics tracks, allowing American athletes to compete on a surface recognized as a global standard for indoor competition.

Among the most important venues are some of the most prestigious indoor facilities in the country:

  • Albuquerque Convention Center (New Mexico) – featuring a Mondo portable banked track with Mondotrack WS surface, known for its speed and altitude advantages.
  • Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex (New York) – equipped with a Mondo hydraulic banked track with Super X 720 surface.
  • The Podium (Spokane, Washington) – one of the most modern indoor facilities in the United States, featuring a Mondo athletics track designed for elite indoor competition.

These facilities demonstrate how Mondo athletics tracks have become the reference standard for top-level indoor competitions in the United States.

On the road to the World Indoor Championships

For many athletes, national indoor championships represent the first step onto the international stage.

Those who qualify through national competitions in the United States, Spain, and across Europe will now have the opportunity to compete at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze, Toruń, once again racing on a Mondo athletics track.

A pathway that highlights how Mondo technology supports athletes at every level of competition, from national trials to the world’s most prestigious indoor events.
