World 60m hurdles records for Grant Holloway and Tia Jones during the U.S. Indoor Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico on Friday, February 16, were the latest entries into the athletics history books to be set on a Mondo Track.
Holloway, the three-time world champion over 110m hurdles outdoors, sped to the stunning time of 7.27 seconds in his heat to shave two-hundredths off his own previous record of 7.29 set in Madrid three years ago which, coincidentally, was also on a Mondo track.
"I knew it was going to be a good one after I got out of the blocks: 7.27 at a nice track is always a good thing," said Holloway, eulogising the Mondo track he had just competed on.
He then withdrew from the final as he was guaranteed his place on the USA team for the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 on March 1-3, which will be the 14th time that Mondo has provided the track for this event.
2018 world U20 100 metres hurdles champion Jones then equalled the recent women's 60m hurdles world record of 7.67 in her heat, before winning her national title in 7.68.
Like Glasgow, Albuquerque can boast an innovative Mondo portable banked track which can be dismantled completely or only partially to facilitate maintenance of the facility and the use of the facilities by other activities.
The Albuquerque Convention Center has had a Mondo track since 2005 and stages 10-12 meetings a year, which have included 10 of the 14 US Indoor Championships since 2010.
Holloway and Jones between them produced the fourth and fifth world record performances on a Mondo track in the Convention Center although they were the first since the track was upgraded to Mondotrack WS in 2021, the most advanced track product in the world and the same surface that was installed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games less than two years earlier.
The Mondotrack WS surface in Albuquerque has been installed on a portable banked 200-metre oval with six 42-inch (107cm) lanes.
The installation also includes a Mondo Fast Break infield with an eight-lane, 60-metre straight, a high jump area, and two long jump/triple jump runways.
The track has distinctive colour palette of turquoise and cherry red, a tribute to the local University of New Mexico athletics team, a frequent user of the track whose uniforms have the same colour scheme.
Femke Bol soared to another world record at the Dutch Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, revisiting the site of her historic 49.26 run from 12 months ago to enhance the world indoor 400m record to 49.24. She secured her national title on Sunday (18), on the Mondo athletics track.
All records are subject to the standard ratification procedure.
