New World record on Mondo athletics track!
On the first day of the Italian Indoor Championships, European 20km race walk bronze medallist Francesco Fortunato broke the long-standing world indoor record in the 5000m race walk with 17:55.65* to become the first athlete in history to break the 18 minute-barrier, breaking the previous world record of 18:07.08 which had stood to Russian Mikhail Shchennikov since 1995 (Ghent, Belgium).
Gianluca Picchiottino finished second (18:50.11 PB) and Riccardo Orsoni third (18:56.55 PB), while Federica Curiazzi topped the 3000m race walk in 12:17.08 PB.
16-year-old Daniele Inzoli set a lifetime best of 7.93m to win the men's long jump title while Larissa Iapichino won the women's long jump title with 6.69m.
There was also a high quality men's high jump final with Matteo Sioli clearing 2.28m PB to beat Manuel Lando (2.26m PB) and Matteo Oliveri topped the men’s vault (570 PB).
