A reduced environmental footprint for a sustainable future in the sport
Mondo has been engaged for many years in the design, production and supply of safe sports solutions for athletes and sports structures, with a particular focus on the environment. Through a series of initiatives, the company dedicates itself to the manufacture of products which are sustainable from the beginning to the end of their lifecycle, with the goal of becoming a leader in sustainability by 2024.
Mondo places the utmost importance on the safety of athletes, environmental protection, and the wellbeing of the structures where our products are installed. Our commitment to sustainability starts right from the design phase, passing through the selection of raw materials and the adoption of renewable energy sources for our plants and systems, right through to the disposal and recycling of our flooring.
With the goal of further optimizing the environmental impact of the production of our athletics tracks, Mondo has decided to invest in a targeted project. The company will be partnering with a team of specialists led by Professor Adriana Del Borghi, Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability at the University of Genoa, through the university's spinoff Tetis Institute. This strategic partnership has provided the company with the knowledge and experience necessary to create a range of products at the cutting edge in terms of sustainability.
Mondo's partnership with Tetis Institute and other partners will allow us to join the "Science Based Targets" (SBTi) initiative this year. This initiative, promoted by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resource Institute (WRI), the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the WWF involves over 2,000 companies all over the world committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
Mondo's approach to sustainability is based on the use of raw materials from natural supply chains, the use of renewable energy and the application of "Ecodesign" tools in the development of proposals for customers. Through its commitment with Tetis Institute and other partners, the company will work to further integrate these sustainable practices in its production process.
The new Mondo track, developed in partnership with Tetis Institute, will represent an important milestone in the company's sustainability journey. Designed to have a minimal environmental impact throughout its entire lifecycle, from production to the end-of-life recovery strategies, Mondo will demonstrate how the sports solutions industry can embrace sustainability without compromising athletes’ performance. Mondo has confirmed itself to be a leader in the sector, promoting a vision of the future in which sports, security and the environment coexist harmoniously.
A key aspect of Mondo's new athletics track is the use of sustainable materials. Mondo favors the use of materials of biological origin from renewable sources, such as natural rubber, and recycled materials from industrial supply chains and end-of-life products. A unique characteristic of this innovative track is the use of calcium carbonate derived from mussel shells, which replaces part of the mineral fillers. This innovative solution no only makes use of industrial waste, preventing it from being put into landfill, but also produces a product with advanced characteristics thanks to the peculiar structure of these minerals. Thanks to these choices, less than half the weight of the track is made from virgin materials of fossil origin, representing a significant improvement compared to previous editions.
The Mondo 2024 track also stands out due to its sustainable production processes. Mondo adopts low-carbon methods and technologies, such as the use of renewable energy, for example from solar panels, and defines its processes in such a way as to minimize waste. In keeping with its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Mondo has recently completed analysis of the company's carbon footprint in accordance with the ISO14064 standard, obtaining certification for all its production sites.
During the use phase, the Mondo 2024 track offers numerous benefits in terms of sustainability. Thanks to its low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and emissions which do not create problems for the athletes’ health, the track creates a healthy and safe environment for competitors with reduced environmental impact. Designed to last over the long term, the Mondo 2024 track reduces the need for frequent replacement and minimizes the generation of waste, guaranteeing exceptional performance throughout its service life.
The sustainability of the Mondo 2024 track also extends to the end-of-life phase. Thanks to an attentive design approach, the product is designed to be disposed of or recycled in a sustainable manner, thus reducing the overall environmental impact. In order to document the results obtained, Mondo is working on certification with external bodies and laboratories. The strict VOC emissions checks will follow the "Green Guard Gold” protocols, while the dedicated body will certify the rapidly renewable and recyclable materials content. Mondo will also supply an "Environmental Product Declaration" to provide further information on the product’s environmental impact.
(Final paragraph) With the Mondo 2024 track, Mondo demonstrates its commitment to environmental sustainability in the sports solutions sector. The company stands out for its use of sustainable materials, low-impact production processes and a constant focus on the entire lifecycle of the product. The Mondo 2024 track represents a milestone in the evolution of sustainable sports solutions and opens up the road to a future in which sport and the environment coexist in harmony.
