In addition to food, music and dancing, the Block Party hosted by Saint Sabina Church featured a Footspeed competition, held on a one-lane portable straightaway Mondotrack WS track, provided by Mondo. Beyond the tangible rewards they received, kids were given a chance to run on the same track surface that will be used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Olympian and American heptathlete Shelia Burrell served as master of ceremonies for the competition.
Saint Sabina is a Catholic Church and faith community led by Father Michael Pfleger. The mostly African American parish and “community of love, education and service” hosts numerous “peace, justice & community” events throughout the year.
Footspeed is part of a national competition launched recently by Raycom Sports and Rich Christensen Media, and Mondo’s presence at the block party was a part of the company’s Mondo Cares program. Mondo, which also supplies running tracks for numerous national and international track and field events, has the unique capability to take high-performing and fully certified tracks to street events and other events where they are needed to showcase the sport of track and field in fun environments where fans can truly be a part of the action in a festival environment.
