Reducing our environmental impact, our vision for a healthier planet

Minimizing the use of natural resources with new formulas and new technologies, implementing environmental responsibility and virtuous circularity actions, and consciously reducing consumption and emissions.

Thanks to the transversal commitment involving all Mondo Group companies, over the years we have managed to transform corporate sustainability objectives into real actions and results.

This might only be a small step within our corporate vision, however its value is still significant, as it helps us to look at the future with positivity and to imagine it even more sustainable.

Corporate sustainability. More awareness, more results

The launch of the voluntary sustainability reporting path undertaken in 2023 has and is allowing Mondo to have a clearer picture of its environmental impact.

Continuous monitoring and analysis help us to be more aware, with measurable and tangible progress and achievements ahead of us:

• The carbon footprint analysis from 2021 onwards on all production sites was validated by ISO 14064 certification
• Our energy performance is monitored according to the directives of Standard ISO 50001
• The subsidiary Artigo has strove to obtain validation of its commitment within the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Environmental responsibility is at the heart of our business model and is managed in a structured way, with 12 sustainability representatives, who plan, manage and oversee the progress of corporate sustainability activities.

Our circular economy projects

In line with our commitment to corporate sustainability, we have focused investments and ideas on identifying more sustainable processes and product solutions.

With the goal of reducing raw material consumption and implementing circular economy actions, we implemented a few interesting projects:

• Nike Grind: we were the first on the market at the beginning of the 2000s to have started a path of recyclability by collaborating with important companies: from the recovery of sports shoes not intended for sale, granules were obtained used for running tracks or as performance fillers for synthetic turf
• A new mixture with calcium carbonate obtained from waste mollusk shells has been introduced in the new Mondo athletics tracks for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In the name of environmental responsibility, Mondo has started a sustainable circular supply chain to promote the Blue Economy. Among other things, this initiative has prevented the landfilling of mollusk shells and the supply of new resources from the fossil supply chain to Mondo.
• The Mondo Iberica Group company obtained the Aragón Circular seal for the circular economy practices implemented. One of the initiatives involves extracting the fillings from playing fields for reuse in other installations or to allocate them to partners who could benefit from them.
• Intergroup exchanges: the various Group companies are organized for the recovery and reintegration of production waste into the production process. A waste recovery plant (15% of the waste generated) has been installed at the Mondo Tufting site to reduce the consumption of new raw materials.
• Gaia urban flooring: the result of research initiated with the aim of replacing flooring components with equivalents with a lower environmental impact. This was applied also to other Mondo range flooring types
   

Energy management

Given the high energy demand of some of our production processes, Mondo has been tracking and monitoring its energy consumption for several years now.

This led to the ISO 50001 energy efficiency management certification at corporate level and to environmental responsibility choices for energy source management:

• Installation of new photovoltaic systems at Mondo Tufting, Unice Toys and Mondo Luxembourg
• Revamping/repowering of the photovoltaic system in Artigo, which will be followed by similar action at Mondo Alba.
• Installation of solar panels at Mondo Floorings
• Preference for supplying energy entirely from renewable sources

To constantly renew Mondo's actions in terms of corporate sustainability, in 2022 the Italian companies - Mondo S.p.A. and Artigo - established an energy committee that meets monthly to discuss strategic energy and source decarbonization choices.

This commitment has been renewed also for the current year. Mondo is already working to further improve the objectives set.
