Still only 19, Tortu set a lifetime best of 10.09 in the heats at the Meeting Internazionale Citta di Savona on Wednesday (23 May) but there was still more to come. A couple of hours later, Tortu returned to the track for the final and took another chunk off his lifetime best, crossing the finish-line in 10.03.
Tortu, 2nd best in Europe 2018, moved to second on the Italian all-time lists, just missing Pietro Mennea’s national record of 10.01 set at altitude in Mexico City at the 1979 World University Games, nearly two decades before Filippo Tortu was born. Behind him, Marcell Jacobs improved to 10.08 (life-time best) after a wind-aided 10.04 in the heats.
In addition to Tortu’s exceptional mark we have to underline other excellent results obtained on MONDO in other specialties: Eseosa Desalu won the 200 m in 20.52 (+0.1) over Davide Manenti 20.55. Michele Trica in 46.42 beat over 400 m World medalist at double distance Amel Tuka 47.19. Good hurdles by Lorenzo Perini 13.60 (+1.9) ahead of Hassane Fofana 13.68. On the women side 22 years Luminosa Bogliolo improved from 13.29 before two weeks to 12.99 (+1.0). Kevin Ojaku leaped to 794 (-0.7) in long jump and Romanian Alexandru Novac won javelin 80.17.
According to athletes and coaches, the meeting organization was excellent: the MONDO track, installed in 2011 responded perfectly to athletes’ performances: it recently undergo a meticulous cleaning session that guarantees better athletics results and product durability.
