The Banco de Moçambique Sports Complex, a new sports complex located in the Matutuíne district of Mozambique, was inaugurated on April 17. The opening of a sports facility doesn't always attract attention, but this occasion deserved it: the country's President, Daniel Chapo, was appointed to cut the ribbon for this complex, given its symbolic value and importance to Mozambique and, in particular, to the region in which it is located.
The Banco de Moçambique Sports Complex extends over 30 hectares and includes several sports facilities, including an athletics track—equipped with Mondo's Sportflex Super X 720 K39 surface, certified by World Athletics—two soccer fields, four multi-purpose fields, three tennis courts, a semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a games room.
The complex's athletics track, which surrounds a soccer field, features 4,500 square meters of Sportflex Super X 720 surfacing. This athletic surface is ideal for training and competition and will contribute to the development of new Mozambican athletes. President Chapo expressed his hope that the Banco de Moçambique Sports Complex will serve as a platform for discovering new talent and a showcase for the country and the region.
This year, Mozambique celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence from Portugal. In the country's modernization process, the inauguration of the Banco de Moçambique Sports Complex is a symbol in this special year, as its importance extends beyond the realm of sport.
The new sports complex is located in the Matutuíne district of Maputo province, in the south of the country, near the border with Swaziland and South Africa. Its inauguration represents an unprecedented boost to the economic, social, and infrastructural progress of this region, far from the capital's main urban center. The project has improved access to electricity, roads, and mobile networks for the approximately 45,000 people living in the area. The drinking water supply has also been improved with the construction of five wells, and its construction has created jobs in the area.
As President Daniel Chapo emphasized during the inauguration, "the complex is a symbol of citizenship, inclusion, and progress."
The new athletics track in Mozambique joins other African sports facilities that have chosen Mondo for their athletics facilities in recent months. The brand-new Stade Olympique in Rabat, Morocco, featuring Mondotrack WS flooring, was inaugurated on May 25th during the 16th Mohammed VI International Athletics Meeting, the fourth stage of the 2025 World Athletics Wanda Diamond League calendar. Next to this large facility is another athletics track also featuring Mondo flooring, the Sportflex Super X 720 system.
In addition to these two tracks, the Lycée d'Excellence (Lydex) Stadium, on the campus of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Rabat, also features Mondo flooring. This unique track features a distinctive lemniscate (a figure-eight shape reminiscent of the infinity symbol), which merges with another circular central track. The competition areas, however, are separated from the main track outside the stadium itself. The entire facility extends over 25,000 square meters of Sportflex Super X 720 K39 sports flooring.
