Tenerife's Insular Athletics Centre will once again have a Mondo athletics track

Located in Tíncer, one of the most important athletics tracks in the Canary Islands will debut this year with over 7,700 square metres of Sportflex Super X 720 athletics flooring. Mondo will replace the stadium's fixed sports equipment.

2025 promises to be a historic year for athletics in the Canary Islands, both nationally and in Europe: the athletics track of the Tenerife Island Athletics Centre (CIAT), one of the most important in the Canary Islands, will also have a Mondo sports floor this year. The company will be responsible for the renovation of this facility with over 7,700 square meters of Sportflex Super X 720 athletics track, the surface that guarantees excellent technical and biomechanical performance, and for the supply of fixed equipment.

Located in Tíncer (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the island of Tenerife) and managed by IDECO (Insular Management for Sport, Culture and Leisure), this athletics track will once again be confirmed as one of the benchmark athletics facilities in 2025.

After the modification of the athletics surface carried out in 2016, the main athletics track will regain the Mondo brand in 2025, once again offering athletes an optimal surface for training and competition.

A Unique Stadium

Inaugurated on April 21, 2007, the sports complex that houses the Tíncer athletics track was designed by the architectural firm AMP Arquitectos (Artengo, Martín and Rodríguez-Pastrana). Its spectacular design is an allegory of a volcanic crater and, when it was inaugurated, the athletics track was equipped with a Mondo sports surface. The site has never gone unnoticed: the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) selected this project for the 2006 exhibition "New Architecture in Spain" and it was even chosen for the cover of the exhibition catalogue. The awards do not end there: it also received the Special Jury Prize at the XIII Canary Islands Architecture Awards, awarded by the Official College of Architects of the Canary Islands.

The Tíncer athletics track has thus earned itself a reputation as a unique venue for high-level athletics and a symbol of identity for the entire island.

New athletics track and equipment

This athletics track located in the Canary Islands has eight lanes and a starting line, a double lane for the long jump and triple jump and two complete competition areas in the crescent zones. The Sportflex Super X 720 athletics track will be installed on the main track, taking into account the specifications for stress zones according to World Athletics regulations, in the jumping and competition areas and in the two access corridors to the track from the changing rooms and the call room, which will also have the same surface.

The improvements to be made to this sports complex in Tenerife will also include the renovation of the fixed athletics equipment (hammer, discus, pole vault stages and estuary hurdle) and various construction works (such as the pipelines for measuring time using transponders). Once the work is completed, Tíncer will meet all the requirements to be certified as a Class 2 athletics track according to the World Athletics classification.

This is what the new CIAT sports surface will look like.

The new athletics track that will be installed at the CIAT in Tíncer, Sportflex Super X 720 K39, is the ideal surface for both competition and training facilities because it provides athletes with the perfect combination of shock absorption, vertical deformation and energy return. The structure of the upper rubber layer provides unparalleled elasticity and great resistance to nails. This texture provides excellent grip and traction, as well as effective water evacuation.

The bottom layer, on the other hand, has the same elongated honeycomb geometric structure as the Mondotrack athletics track. The hexagonal air cells deform in three dimensions and provide the ideal combination of impact absorption, energy accumulation and return, improving the surface's reaction times and reducing fatigue and the risk of injury for athletes.

Sportflex Super X 720 is not only a high-level athletics flooring with excellent technical and biomechanical performance, but also reflects Mondo's commitment to sustainability:

  • the product is OK recycled certified by TUV AUSTRIA with 41% recycled content.
  • it has also obtained Greenguard and Greenguard Gold certification, thanks to minimal emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and the absence of amines and isocyanates
  • the product has obtained the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

The Canary Islands are betting on Mondo athletics tracks

The return of the Mondo brand to the CIAT athletics track joins many other athletics facilities in the Canary Islands that already benefit from the company's flooring, such as the Francisco Peraza Stadium in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the Los Laureles Sports City in Tegueste, the Venancio Monzón Sports City in San Isidro-Gáldar (Gran Canaria), the Vecindario Municipal Stadium, located in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), the Llano Tesa Sports Centre in Los Llanos de Aridane (La Palma) or the Tejina module (San Cristóbal de La Laguna). The athletics track in La Gomera will soon be added to this list.
