Mondo’s athletics track in Tokyo gets ready for great perfomances

The countdown to the next World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025 has begun.

Four years after Tokyo’s National Stadium was the centre of global attention when the Japanese capital staged the Olympic Games, the eyes of the world will return when the World Athletics Championships take place in the same venue from 13-21 September.

Helping more than 2000 athletes from around 200 nations strive for medals will be the stadium’s Mondo athletics track.

Acknowledged as one of the world’s best surfaces for elite athletes to rise to the occasion and installed in one of the most magnificent stadiums in the world, Tokyo will undoubtably dominate the sporting headlines before, during and after the World Athletics Championships.

The athletics track was specifically developed for the 2020 Olympic Games – which were eventually held the following year due to the global pandemic – in a unique shade of red before being constructed and installed between August and November 2019.

The nine-lane National Stadium has 19,900 square metres of Mondo athletics track which converts into approximately 235 tonnes of surfacing product.

To maximize the speed of athletes and improve their performance, the track fuses two sperate layers through a process that guarantees continuous, seamless material.

The vulcanized rubber top layer is designed to optimise grip and elasticity under any conditions while the air-filled cavities of the lower layer are responsible for shock absorption, energy storage and an immediate kinetic response.

The result is a solid layer with optimised elasticity and deformability which, in turn, guarantees a uniform dynamic response that supports athletes in controlling their pace, rhythm and stability of movement.

The combination of these elements has allowed to Mondo to produce the most technologically advanced athletics tracks in the world.
