As Icahn Stadium marks its 20th anniversary, the iconic New York City venue renews its commitment to world-class performance with a new Mondo Super X 720 track—continuing a partnership that has supported elite competition, community engagement, and athletic development since 2005.
Icahn Stadium, located on Randall’s Island in New York City, has long stood as a beacon of elite athletic performance. Since opening in 2005 on the site of the former Downing Stadium, the 5,000-seat venue has hosted over 200,000 athletes, more than 300 nationally ranked performances, and upwards of 60 meets annually. From NCAA regional championships to international showcases, Icahn has earned its reputation as one of the premier track and field facilities in the United States.
In 2008, Icahn became the first facility in the U.S. to receive the prestigious Class 1 certification from IAAF (now World Athletics)—a designation reserved for venues that meet the highest standards and make them eligible to host top-tier international competitions. That distinction not only affirmed Icahn’s technical excellence but also positioned it as a destination for world-class performances.
From day one, Mondo has been part of Icahn Stadium’s foundation. When the Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA) commissioned the stadium in 2005 to replace Downing Stadium, they selected Mondo’s Super X Performance track to anchor the venue. That decision set the stage for historic moments and a legacy of speed that continues today.
For 20 years, the Mondo surface has supported thousands of athletes and hundreds of competitions, consistently delivering the speed, durability, and reliability that elite performance demands.
“Mondo’s track record has proven itself time and time again,” said Louis Vazquez, director of operations at Icahn Stadium. “We’ve worked with Mondo since Icahn opened 20 years ago, so selecting them again was a no-brainer.”
Icahn Stadium’s Mondo track has been the stage for some of the most iconic performances in track and field history:
These records helped cement Icahn’s reputation as a world-class venue and demonstrated the performance advantages of Mondo’s surfaces.
As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, Icahn Stadium once again turned to Mondo, this time for the installation of its Super X 720 track surface. This vulcanized rubber track surface was designed to provide the perfect combination of shock absorption, vertical deformation, and energy return. The result is a surface that supports both speed and safety, enabling athletes to perform at their highest level.
The renovation of Icahn Stadium, featuring a new Mondo track, was completed in October 2025. Following the renovation, the venue is slated for World Athletics Class 1 certification, an elite designation held by only four outdoor venues in the United States. Once certified, Icahn Stadium will be eligible to host top-tier international competitions, reaffirming its position as one of the nation’s premier track and field destinations.
Over the years, Icahn Stadium has welcomed a wide range of prestigious events, including:
The first event for the new Super X 720 surface is Athlos 2025, scheduled for October. Renowned athletes such as Gabby Thomas, Tara Davis-Woodhall, and Masai Russell are expected to compete, continuing Icahn’s tradition of hosting the sport’s brightest stars.
Beyond elite competition, Icahn Stadium is part of a broader mission led by RIPA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to stewarding the park’s 330 acres and enriching the lives of New Yorkers. Through free arts and cultural programming, environmental education, and hands-on volunteer opportunities, RIPA fosters healthy, active lifestyles and meaningful community engagement across all ages and backgrounds.
Mondo has proudly supported several RIPA initiatives over the years, including youth-focused events and sustainability programming aligned with the company’s values. This shared commitment to excellence and inclusion reinforces the long-standing partnership—not just on the track, but throughout the park.
The renovation of Icahn Stadium with Mondo’s Super X 720 track is more than a resurfacing—it’s a recommitment to excellence, sustainability, and the future of track and field. As the stadium enters its third decade, the partnership between Mondo and RIPA remains a model of innovation and trust.
With a legacy of speed and a surface built for tomorrow’s records, Icahn Stadium and Mondo are once again setting the pace for what’s possible.
