The Northgate Arena in Chester, one of the region's leading leisure and sports facilities, has recently completed a major sports hall refurbishment designed to enhance user experience while minimizing disruption to daily activities.
The project included the installation of approximately 1,200 square metres of MONDO Powerplay P1, a multipurpose indoor sports flooring system that combines Powerplay vulcanized rubber flooring with Everlay® Protection Green underlayment. Designed for high-traffic sports environments, the system delivers durability, comfort and athletic performance while supporting the wide variety of activities hosted by the venue.
Designed for busy multi-use environments, the new sport surface delivers the durability, comfort and performance required by modern sports facilities while helping operators maximize the value of their infrastructure.
Refurbishing a busy sports venue often presents a difficult challenge: how to improve performance and safety while reducing costs, downtime and waste.
At Northgate Arena, this challenge was addressed by installing the new flooring system directly over the existing sports floor.
By avoiding the complete removal and reconstruction of the original substrate, the project significantly reduced refurbishment time and allowed the facility to return to operation more quickly, limiting disruption for users and operators.
Powerplay P1 was selected for its ability to combine athletic performance with the practical requirements of a busy leisure facility. The product is certified according to EN 14904 and has obtained approvals from leading international sports federations, including FIBA, IHF, FIVB and FIFA Futsal, confirming its suitability for a wide range of indoor sports activities.
Its ultra-matte PRO2 surface technology reduces glare and improves visual comfort, while the vulcanized rubber construction delivers exceptional durability thanks to a 3 mm surface layer featuring a homogeneous 1 mm wear layer engineered for long-term performance.
The flooring also exceeds EN 14904 requirements for indentation resistance and wear, making it suitable for both sporting activities and the non-sporting events regularly hosted in modern leisure centres.
Safety was another important consideration. The product achieves fire classifications up to Bfl-s1, even when installed over existing synthetic floors, helping simplify refurbishment projects while meeting stringent safety standards.
In addition, antibacterial properties, ease of maintenance and low-emission certifications such as GREENGUARD Gold and Class A+ contribute to a healthier indoor environment for athletes, students and visitors.
The flooring system is further supported by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and incorporates recycled and bio-based materials, reinforcing the project's sustainability objectives.
Increasingly, sports facility owners are looking for refurbishment strategies that maximize existing assets rather than replacing them entirely.
The Northgate Arena project demonstrates how modern indoor sports flooring technologies can help extend the life of sports infrastructure while improving performance and user comfort. By combining a loose-lay installation system with high-performance rubber sports flooring, the project delivered an effective upgrade with reduced environmental impact compared to a full reconstruction.
The durability of vulcanized rubber also contributes to a more sustainable approach to facility management. A surface that maintains its performance characteristics over time requires fewer interventions and fewer resources throughout its lifecycle, helping operators optimize both environmental and economic outcomes.
At Northgate Arena, the new flooring installation provides a durable and versatile platform that will support sport, fitness and community activities for years to come.
Completed in collaboration with DYNAMIK Sports Flooring, the project demonstrates how the right indoor sports flooring solution can help facilities improve performance, sustainability and user experience while maximizing the value of existing infrastructure.
By combining federation-certified sports performance, long-term durability and sustainability credentials within a single flooring solution, Powerplay P1 offers facility operators a practical way to meet the diverse requirements of modern indoor sports venues.
