Torun’s brand new athletics track is ready to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships that is coming to Kujawy Pomorze, Poland in 2026
The Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena Torun – which will host the next edition of the World Athletics Indoor Championships between 20-22 March next year – has been given a major makeover thanks to Mondo.
Torun stadium managers have once again opted for Mondo’s renowned Sportflex Super X K39 athletics track for their permanent banked facility that was installed in the arena when it was opened in August 2014.
The venue is ready to welcome the best athletes on the planet for the next edition of the most important indoor athletics championship in the world.
The installation started in mid-June and took just over three months.
President of the Kujawsko-Pomorska regional athletics federation Krzysztof WolsztyĆski, which was instrumental in opting for Mondo once again commented: “We might still have a few things to refine, but I think we have plenty of time to get everything done, However, Mondo is the best athletics surface for indoor track and field.”
He added: “I think the first records will probably be broken on this surface as soon as 22 February – the famed Copernicus Cup, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting – and the elite stars will definitely be present, because everyone will want to compete in Torun and experience the track a month before the world indoor championships."
The Copernicus Cup meeting famously saw pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis advertise his ascent to greatness when he cleared the first of his 14 world records – eight of which have come on Mondo tracks – by going over 6.17m in 2020.
The Copernicus Cup will be last of eight World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meetings in 2026 and the final dress rehearsal for the World Athletics Indoor Championships a month later.
However, it is just part of a hectic athletics diary for the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena Torun during the first few months of the year.
Annually, since 2015, 7-10 athletics meetings every winter have been staged in the arena.
Athletes of all ages and ability have had the chance to experience the excellent properties that the Sportflex Super X K39 athletics track has in helping athletes excel, whatever their level.
An estimated 600 athletes from approximately 130 nations will then make their way to Torun next March – the venue of the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships – to follow in their footsteps on Mondo’s new permanent banked track in one of the great indoor athletics arenas in the world.
