There are nine levels and range from top category competitions, such as the World Championships, to events managed by national federations.
When planning to build or renovate a sports facility, World Athletics (WA) recommends taking into consideration the level of competition you wish to host, whether the venue will be dedicated solely to athletics or multiple sports, as well as other factors that from complementary services to the track itself or the capacity of the venue.
But how do you know what types of athletics competitions World Athletics establishes and what requirements they entail? The international organization establishes nine categories, for which the level of the competition, its duration in days, the number of athletes who can compete at the same time or even the number of track assistants who can be present at the same time are taken into consideration. In addition to all these requirements, World Athletics also establishes which conditions/requirements are recommended for each stadium/facility based on the type of event. All this information is collected in the Athletics Facilities Manual (page 11 and following), drawn up by World Athletics.
World Athletics structures the types of athletics competitions into nine categories, establishing different requirements and/or limits for each of them:
From the list of 9 types of competitions comes a subclassification that World Athletics calls "Constructive Categories", in reference to the requirements that the venue should meet to host a competition. This subclassification structures the casings into five other categories (from I to V) depending on their characteristics. When assigning one of these levels, consideration is given, among many other aspects, to how many lanes the ring and the straight are equipped with or whether there are areas enabled for warm up. Details of this classification can be found on page 14 of the Track and Field Facilities Manual.
