From seashells to a new sustainable athletics track

Three years of trials, tests, and validation — leading to an extraordinary result.

Mondotrack™ Ellipse Impulse is the world’s first athletics track to use calcium carbonate derived from natural, renewable sources instead of mining extraction.

To understand its impact, just consider that a single sustainable athletics track produced with biogenic carbonate avoids tens of tons of waste and offsets the emissions generated by a Euro 4 diesel car driven for 60,000 km.

Mondo achieved this milestone in collaboration with Nieddittas, a Sardinian cooperative of fishermen specializing in mussel farming and fishing.

Together, we created an eco-friendly supply chain that recovers mussel shells not destined for consumption — particularly rich in calcium carbonate.

This collaboration allowed us to replace a key component of the flooring compound with a sustainable alternative, eliminating the need for mining extraction, a process with a considerable environmental impact.

When the tests confirmed equivalent performance to traditional compounds, we realized a new era had begun for sustainable sports flooring!

The latest formula developed by Mondo Labs allows tracks to be made with up to 50% of their weight coming from renewable or recycled materials. The group boasts having obtained several OK Recycled product certifications.
• All flooring solutions are designed to guarantee low VOC emissions and are certified according to the most authoritative sustainability standards: Greenguard Gold, Class A+ (French Decret), TÜV Austria certifications.
• Mondo was among the first global players to develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its surface range, providing a detailed analysis of the full life-cycle impact of its sports flooring.
• Impact monitoring extends to every production stage: from sourcing renewable energy — with a total photovoltaic output of 6.8 MWp — to low-carbon processes, including waste and scrap reduction.
