Rain or Shine, Mondo athletics track shows its qualities at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025

The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 will be remembered for the myriad of superb performances delivered by the 1992 athletes in action in the Japanese capital.

Many observers – from athletes to officials and athletics fans – have already happily proclaimed it possibly the best ever edition of the championships, and Mondo is proud to have played its part.

The athletics track in Tokyo’s National Stadium was the 14th World Athletics Championships, and sixth of the last seven, at which Mondo has provided the track in the main competition venue.

By the time the curtain came down, after nine days of thrills, the record tally in Tokyo was (excluding out-of-stadia events and the heavy throws):

  • 1 World Record (Mondo Duplantis, pole vault 6.30m)
  • 5 Area Records
  • 8 Championship Records
  • 18 world-leading marks
  • 52 National Records

Not just Mondo Duplantis

In addition to Mondo Duplantis’ latest feat, among the eye-catching highlights were:

• US sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden completing a sprint treble by winning gold in the 100m, 200m – in world-leading and personal best times of 10.61 and 21.68 which move her up to 4th and 8th on the all-time lists for those events – and 4x100m.

• A superb 5000m and 10,000m distance double by Kenya’s incomparable Beatrice Chebet,

• USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone winning the 400m in a championship record of 47.78 – the second-fastest time in history – to become the only athlete in World Championships history to win gold medals in the 400m (2025) and 400m hurdles (2022). For good measure, in Tokyo she also anchored the USA to 4x400m gold in a championship record of 3:16.61.

Whatever the weather, Mondo delivers

However, everyone will also remember Tokyo for the challenging weather conditions.

Temperatures soared into the 30s Celsius (90s Fahrenheit) during the opening days, often accompanied by claustrophobic humidity, and then Tokyo suffered a deluge on the final day.

However, every square metre of the Mondo athletics track – The nine-lane National Stadium has 19,900 square metres of Mondo athletics track , which converts into approximately 235 tonnes of surfacing product – showed its ability to deliver optimum performance whatever the weather.

Mondo athletics track features a series of unique technologies, including an embossed pattern of alternating elevations and depressions on the surface that form a complex, interconnected channel network that guarantees traction and efficient water drainage.

Despite the fickle weather gods in Tokyo, Mondo athletics track didn’t fall short at any time from its goal of helping athletes reach their peak and deliver record-breaking performances.
